Basic Facts

North Carolina is located in the southeastern part of the United States. The bordering states of North Carolina are Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. North Carolina covers 52,671 square miles, and is 28th in size compared to other states. There are 9,535,483 people living in the state. The population is ranked 10th compared to other states. The capital of North Carolina is Raleigh. Raleigh is located in the middle of the state. There are 403,892 people that live in Raleigh. Two other major cities are Charlotte and Winston-Salem. Charlotte is located in the west of the state. Winston-Salem is located near the Mountain Region. Charlotte has a population of 731,424 people and Winston-Salem has 229,617 residents living there.  

Climate

The climate is relatively mild in the winter and summer. Normal temperatures in the winters drop as low as forty  degrees Fahrenheit; in the summer time it raises to eighty degrees Fahrenheit. The record low temperature in the winter is negative thirty-four degrees Fahrenheit. Record high temperature in summer time is one hundred ten degrees Fahrenheit. Average January temperature is forty-one degrees Fahrenheit,the average July temperature is seventy degrees Fahrenheit. About fifty inches of rain falls yearly.   

Lands Regions

   The Mountain Region covers about ten percent of North Carolina. This region is in the Western part of North Carolina. The forests covers about 1 mile  of the Mountain Region. The Black Mountains and Blue Ridge are the highest mountains in the Mountain Region.

   The Piedmont  region covers forty-five percent of North Carolina. The Piedmont is named after the Piedmont Plateau. Rolling hills and low mountains cover The Piedmont. The highest elevations are in the east and west.

   The Atlantic Coastal Plains can be found. In the eastern part of North Carolina. There are sandhills in the Atlantic Coastal Plains. The Great Dismal Swamp is in the Atlantic Coastal Plains.

   The Roanoke River forms in the Blue Ridge Mountains and then flows into the northeast and ends in the Albemarle Sound  partly flowing in Virginia . This river is about four hundred ten miles long and one of the largest rivers in North Carolina.

   The Neuse and Tar rivers are located in central North Carolina. Both flow into the Pamlico Sound. The Neuse River is one hundred forty miles long and the Tar River is one hundred fifty miles long. They are both above flood stage in eastern North Carolina. The Neuse River is two million years old.            

   The Cape Fear River is in the southeastern part of North Carolina.   The Atlantic Ocean ends near Cape Fear. The Europeans found the first river.  The Cape Fear River is 202 miles long and flows through 27 counties. North Carolina is considered the largest river.

    Lake Mattamuskeet is located on the eastern side of North Carolina near the Atlantic Ocean.  It became a lake on July 11, 1585. Lake Mattamuskeet is a great lake for fishing. Lake Mattamuskeet the largest natural lake in North Carolina. Lake Mattamuskeet is 15 miles long and 6 miles wide.

    Lake Norman is located in the southern part of North Carolina near the city of Charlotte.  Lake Norman has five hundred twenty miles of shoreline making it the largest manmade lake in North Carolina. Lake Norman is a popular vacation destination. Many visitors enjoy Lake Norman for its boating, camping and fishing.

    Some special geological places in North Carolina are waterfalls, canyons, and beaches.  One waterfall is called Whitewater and it is located near Brevard. Many people visit Whitewater for its fun trails and shady forests. The Blue Ridge Canyon is located in the mountain region.  

    In addition, there are many beautiful beaches in the state of North Carolina.  One beach area, called the Outer Banks, is located on the eastern shore of the state.  The Outer Banks is unique for its skinny chain of barrier islands. The Outer Banks is visited by many beach lovers and a popular vacation spot. The city of Wilmington also has many beaches surrounding it. Those beaches include Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach  These are located in the southern area of North Carolina and are a popular vacation place.

In conclusion, North Carolina is a very fascinating state.  With a warm climate and the blue lakes, North Carolina brings tourists from all around. North Carolina has amazing sites to see beaches, lakes and tall mountains. When one goes to North Carolina in the summer, they go to the beach but in the winter, one can go sledding. That's why North Carolina is such a interesting state.
