North Carolina History

North Carolina is one of the last of the thirteen colonies.North Carolina was the twelfth state to become a state. North Carolina had  many explorers that came in 1500-1700. A major event that happened not so long ago was the hurricanes that hit North Carolina. Everyone got out safely but only one death in hurricane Irma. North Carolina’s governor is Roy Cooper.

The First People

       The Paleo Indians were the first people to arrive in North Carolina. The Paleo Indians Arrived in 10,000 BCE. They lived in temporary settlements also moved from place to place a lot. They hunted massive animals such as mastodon and bison and gather plants.   

 

        The Cherokee were in North Carolina before it became a state.The Cherokee lived in the Western mountains. The Cherokee were there from 1,000 to 1,450. They lived in seven groups each with their own special skill. Each group wore different color of feathers; they each had a peace chief, a war chief and a priest. The woman gradened, cooked meals, and took care of the family. They planted corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers. They cooked cornbread, soups,and stews. The men were in charge of hunting, fishing, fighting wars, and making peace.

 

       The Pamlico Native Americans were one of the first tribes to be in North Carolina . The Pamlico lived in the eastern mountains.They fished for herring, sturgeon, and others types of fish. They hunted for deer, bear, rabbit, and squirrels. One of there major corps were corn. They gathered nuts, seeds, wild strawberries, and other types of fruits.

Settlers and Explores

         Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the first non-American to come to North Carolina. Raleigh came from England. He was here because they were going to establish an English colony to have a base for English ships to stop for repairs and supplies.  He came in 1585.  They explored the Roanoke Island.  Raleigh sent hundreds of men and women to the colony.  Then John White became Governor.  Whenever they needed supplies John White sailed back to England.  When he came back to the colony the colony was deserted.  North Carolina was called The Last Colony.

 

       King Charles was another person that first came to North Carolina.  King Charles was from England.  He arrived in 1629.  He explored the coast of North and South Carolina.  his son Charles the second granted the land to 8 noblemen.  The four of the eight were slave traders.  The settlers were encouraged to use Africans as slaves.  Eventually, colonists threw out their governor and ruled themselves which split North and South Carolina.   

 

       Blackbeard wasn't a typical settler he was a pirate.  Pirates attacked ships and robbed them for their guns, liquor, and other goods.  He had more than 300 pirates and seized more than 40 ships.  He was killed in 1718 at Ocracoke Inlet.

 

 

 

 

Slavery 

     One major event that happened is slavery. In 1830a law passed that they couldn’t teach slaves how to read or write. There was especially during 1800-1860. They need slavery so that someone can take care of their crops like corn, wheat, cotton, rice, and tobacco. Not all african americans were slaves in North Carolina. In 1860 there were 30,000 free blacks and another 300,000 were slaves. After the civil war is over North Carolina allowed african americans their  freedom and the right to vote.

Cilvil War 

   The second major event is about the civil war. In 1860 the country was divided into northern states and wanted to end slavery. Southern planters wanted to keep slavery to do the work in the fields. In May 1861 North Carolina seceded and also joined the Confederacy. There were many farmers with small farms that didn’t want to fight to keep slavery. There were some people from North Carolina the fought in the Union army. There were only twenty battles fought in North Carolina. The bloodiest battle was the battle of Bentonville on March 19-21, 1865. The war ended in April 1865. One-sixth of the total Confederate were dead in North Carolina.

 

Hurricanes

     The third major event is hurricanes. Hurricanes often hit the North Carolina Coast. Only Florida and Louisiana get more hurricanes than North Carolina.  Hurricane Floyd hit North Carolina 1999. There was a lot of flooding and there were thirty-five deaths in North Carolina. Cost billions of dollars of damage. Another hurricane that caused damage was hurricane Irma; it started off at a category five hurricane and then got lower. In the Atlantic winds were only at eighty-three miles per hour in the western North Carolina mountains. The wind went towards the Atlantic then went toward Leeward Islands. They started making emergency lists because they thought they were going to get hit hard. Happened on September 11, 2017. Out of everyone in that state only one person got killed.  Only 62,000 people without power.

executive

The Executive branch governor is Roy Cooper the Lieutenant Governor is Dan Forest. They serve four years. The Executive branch carries out the state laws. The governor is the head of the executive branch and the lieutenant governor helps out. There are other executive officers that are in charge of the different departments.

Legislative

The Legislative Branch is to make the laws. North Carolina's legislature is called the General Assembly. It's Divided into two houses the fifty-person senate and the one hundred person house of representatives.  

Judical

The Judicial branch enforces state laws. Made up of judges that apply the law. They listen to the cases in the court and decide if a law has been broken. 

Local Govenment

The Local Government in North Carolina is divided into 100 counties. Each county has three to seven-member board of commission.  

Conclusion 

For many years North Carolina had explorers and native Americans that lived there before Americans did. They survived with all the food they had there. Also North Carolina had slaves and they made them work very hard them while they to go fight in the war. One major event that happened recently was that North Carolina got hit by hurricanes. A lot of them did a lot of damage and took a lot of money to clean it up. Today, North Carolina has people come from everywhere to watch football and basketball teams play.

Flag

North Carolina’s flag is split into a half. The top half is red. The bottom half is white. The left side is blue. There are words saying May 20, 1775 on the top in between it has a N then a white star then a C below that says April 12, 1776.

Seal

     North Carolina’s seal has a beach in the background with a ship. Then it has a woman standing up on the left with a paper saying constitution. On the right there is a woman sitting down on a log with fruit falling out with straw in her hand. At the top of the seal it says May 20, 1775 and at the bottom it say April 12, 1776 .there is a circle around the seal says THE GREAT SEAL of THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA. Then says ESSE QUAM VIDERI at the bottom.
